The Divine Service begins at 5 PM on Saturday evenings and at 9 AM Sunday mornings. Some people arrive thirty minutes beforehand; some walk into the sanctuary just after the bell rings. Whichever one you are, or if you are somewhere in between, we simply say: "We're glad you're here!"
Faith Lutheran Church is conveniently located on Godfrey Road near the intersection of three key highways: US 67, IL 111, and IL 255. You can enter our parking lot through the south entrance. Visitor parking spots are conveniently located near the south entrance to the church, but throughout the lot you'll find ample parking with spacious spots.
The long sidewalk that leads to the south entrance to the building provides the most convenient access to the sanctuary, where the Divine Service takes place. The middle entrance to the building, near the flagpole, provides easy access to our activity center and Sunday school classrooms. Whichever entrance you use, the members of Faith can help you find your way around!
Clothes!
When you enter our sanctuary, an usher will hand you a bulletin. There, you'll find the liturgy of the Divine Service printed for you to help you participate. The hymns that we sing can be found in the hymnal in the pew rack in front of you. Don't worry if the service is unfamiliar to you the first time. As we repeat words from the Bible in church every week, God plants His Word in our hearts and fills us with joy.
The Sacrament of the Altar is the true Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and the wine, instituted by Christ himself for Christians to eat and to drink. As the name Holy Communion indicates, this precious meal is also a sign of a congregation's confession of faith. Those who are communicant members of a congregation of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod (LCMS), or another church body with which we are in fellowship, are welcome to commune at our altar. If you've never communed with us before, please introduce yourself to the pastor before the service. If you are not a communicant member of the LCMS, we ask that you wait to commune with us until you have been instructed and believe what our congregation teaches. Pastor Appel regularly offers such instruction--please contact him, and he would be happy to visit with you about that today!
After the Divine Service ends, please join us in our activity center for coffee, fruit, and pastries. This is a joyful time of Christian friendship and conversation that is a vital part of our congregational family here at Faith. Starting about 10:30 AM, Sunday school classes and Bible study are available for all ages from preschool through adults. Please stay and join us to learn more from God's Word!
The saints of God gather at Faith Lutheran Church in Godfrey, IL every weekend for the Divine Service. This name is intentional. In the Divine Service, God is the One who serves us. Jesus teaches us this truth in Matthew 20:28: "The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."
As a confessional Lutheran church, Faith Lutheran Church is a liturgical Lutheran church. We use the settings of the Divine Service and the hymns found in Lutheran Service Book, the most recent hymnal of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. The liturgy that guides our worship has been handed down by Christians from one generation to the next over many centuries. Some of the hymns we sing and the collects we pray go back to only a few hundred years after the ascension of Jesus. As the Word of God contained in these resources has sustained Christians in the faith before us, so that same Word sustains us in the faith now and will continue to sustain Christians in the faith until the Lord Jesus returns on the Last Day.
